We show below the scores and some comments about Puente del Ea Reserva 2015 and Puente del Ea Vino de Autor Tempranillo 2017.
93 PTS: ‘A warm, generous and forthright vintage makes for a tempranillo of full fruit compliment despite or in spite of the traditional full-on wood aging. The fruit does well to stand up and be counted in the face of so much savour and spice. Very tannic, wholly impressive, structured and capable of aging a decade or more, with ease. This just feels good and right. Drink 2022-2029.’ – Michael Godel
91 PTS: ‘From a small 4 hectare estate in La Rioja Alta, founded in 2001, this is a quite fine, elegantly built Rioja with classic, maturing aromas of leather, cedar, vanillin and ripe dried cherry/fig fruit. French oak is used here as opposed to more typical American. I really like the smooth texture and quite fine pointed structure. The tannins are still quite pronounced, but balanced, indicating this could age another five years with ease. The length is excellent.’ – David Lawrason
90 PTS: ‘A punchy and forward, more modern-style rioja made from 70% tempranillo and 15% each of garnacha and graciano, fruity and lively, attractively perfumed, drinking well now. The palate shows fine-grained, lightly dusty tannins and vibrant acids, with little wood influence to report at this stage. Length and depth are good. Totally correct and enjoyable.‘ – John Szabo, MS’
93 PTS: ‘6000 bottles of this signature expression of Rioja were made in 2017, crafted in a blended modern-traditional style, featuring an equal measure of fruit and wood influence. What’s most impressive here is the genuine length, depth and complexity on offer – this is quality wine to be sure. I love the mix of dark fruit and sweet oak spice, classy, composed and integrated. Tannins are firm but fine, acids are balanced, and complexity is very good indeed. Fine wine, best 2022-2033.’ – John Szabo, MS
92 PTS: ‘Massive wine in many respects, higher acidity, alcohol and attitude.’ – Michael Godel
91 PTS: ‘From a small 4ha high altitude estate in the coolest, westernmost part of Rioja, this is 100% tempranillo from very stony, calcerous soils, aged 18 months in French oak. The nose shows almost overripe, cooked fruit, with some chocolate, roasted chestnut, leather and licorice. It is full bodied, very dense, smooth and almost hot on the palate (15% alch). Drenched in flavour, with fine, well embedded’ – David Lawrason
